Recounting....

Qatar Character!

Dhow boats are traditional merchant boats made primarily out of wood. The one we went on in January 2009 was perfect for watching the Doha skyline at sunset.

The Qatari flag is maroon and white. The maroon part symbolizes the Kharijite Muslims and all the wars Qatar has been involved in. The zigzag edges remind us that Qatar is the 9th member of the 'reconciled Emirates’ at the end of the Qatari-British treaty in 1916.

Before discovering the North Gas Field in 1977, Qatar relied on pearl diving to make money. Not much is done any more, but the pearl in the oyster shell is a very popular image.

What always amazes me about this city is the massive amounts of construction going on! This picture really shows all the cranes in the skyline.

The Museum of Islamic Art opened in December of 2008. The designer, Chinese American architect Leoh Min Pei (more commonly known as I. M. Pei) also did the Louvre. At first I was not very impressed to be honest, but the angles and way the light reflects off it is really amazing.
